Student life

Student Dormitory

The BME Tódor Kármán Dormitory is located at the Buda end of the Petőfi Bridge, about 5 minutes’ walk from the BME central building. The dormitory can accommodate almost 1000 students on 9 floors, of which approximately 15% are students from the Faculty of Natural Sciences. The rooms are double rooms equipped with a fridge. Each corridor has access to a separate kitchen, a lounge, a shower and a coed toilet. Next to the entrance of the dormitory is the Karman Club, which serves as a café and canteen during the day and a bar in the evening. In the basement you find the Old's Club, one of the oldest and perhaps the best nightclubs of BME, which offers admission-free entertainment for young people every second Thursday. The dormitory is in the immediate vicinity of the university, within a few minutes' walk of all the university buildings, as well as several inexpensive restaurants, fast food outlets and grocery stores.

Tódor Kármán College was inaugurated on 20 August 1966 and renovated in 2007 under a PPP scheme: windows and glass façades were replaced and were insulated. The interior, however, has been almost completely replaced, except for the supporting structures: new cladding, windows, lifts and fire protection system. The capacity of almost 1000 students is shared in the largest part with students from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

Dormitory life is most active during the academic year, as the student clubs and the technical college organise most of their activities then. In autumn and spring, the dormitory also hosts a number of events, such as the Faculty Days, the Professional Day and the SLIP Mechanical Engineering Days.

The main positive aspect of the college is that you are close to your fellow students, so you can always ask them for help if you are not going well in your studies.

The dormitory is located at 9-11 Irinyi J. u., 1111 Budapest, a one-minute walk from tram lines 4, 6, stop Petőfi bridge, Buda end.

Students' Union

At BME, like at every Hungarian universities, there is an organization to represent the interests of students during their studies. In a less formal language, this means that the leadership of the university and the faculty gives students a voice in the matters that affect their studies. These include, for example, the revision of curricula, the scheduling of written and oral exams, the regulation of residence halls, and even the amount of stipends and the rewards for certain student activities---taking into account the relevant laws and regulations. In addition, BME provides a wide range of opportunities for students to spend their free time playing sports, attending social events or parties, in order to promote cohesion among students as well as with the faculty. Students take a major role in organizing and running such events. The Students' Union is also responsible for keeping students informed about current events, new opportunities and any changes that affect them.

The Students' Union of the BME Faculty of Natural Sciences is committed to providing information to (to be) students interested in our courses, so if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at info@ttkhk.hu

Eugene Wigner College for Advanced Studies

The Eugene Wigner College for Advanced Studies (Wigner Jenő Szakkolégium, WJSZ) was founded by a few enthusiastic physics and mathematics students in the Spring of 2011, making it one of the youngest colleges at our university. Its aim is to bring together enthusiastic and interested students, to enrich their professional and social life at the university, to broaden their horizons and to forge a good community.

Some of its programmes are open to the public and are not at all only for higher year students. The programmes include lectures, problem-solving and programming seminars, laboratory and factory visits---you can find out all about these on the College's website. In addition to the professional programmes, excursions (e.g. water trips), collective cooking and game parties are also organised as recreational activities.

The Experimental Club is an independent working group of the WJSZ, whose members can design and build various experimental devices themselves. Members can attend special courses and seminars where they can share their knowledge of hobby electronics and experimental physics. A szakmai programok mellett természetesen kirándulásokat (pl. vízitúrát), közös főzéseket, játékos bulikat is szerveznek kikapcsolódásként.

Self-development clubs of the Faculty

Patron Volunteer Group

The Patron Volunteer Group of the Faculty, (Kari Patrónus Öntevékeny Csoport, KAPOCS for short), is the centre of community life at the Faculty of Natural Sciences. It was founded a few years ago by a few enthusiastic students, mainly to help first-year students to integrate and to make their first steps. Today, this role has expanded considerably. The main profile of KAPOCS is still to organise social activities for freshmen, or to help them prepare for some difficult exams, but nowadays, in addition to freshmen, upper-year students also enjoy spending their Thursday evenings at our events. We also focus on popularizing science and building relationships with high school students.

Egugene Wigner Chamber Choir

The Eugene Wigner Chamber Choir (Wigner Jenő Kamarakórus) is formed mostly by students from the Faculty of Natural Sciences, but the choir leaders also welcome external students. At the end of each semester, they give a semi-annual concert, which event is usually full house.

Student Sports Club

The Student Sports Club is a voluntary group for students who are willing to participate in some team sports. Once a week, they organise matches of basketball, volleyball, football, floorball and/or dodgeball in the sports hall of the Tódor Kármán Dormitory. Students from the Faculty of Natural Scienecs are welcome to participate in the programmes. A programokon sok szeretettel várják a TTK-s hallgatókat.

BME Pikkász

BME Pikkász, the newspaper of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, is a spin-off of Téköbká (the predecessor of the Faculty of Natural and Social Sciences, TTTK). The first issue was published at Christmas 2007 and has been published biannually since then. The magazine regularly features a faculty interview, an alumni interview, a TTK programme guide, reports on TTK events, articles from the voluntary clubs, reports on (study) trips, publication of literary pieces by students and many other interesting topics.

All issues to date are available on the Pikkász website: http://karilap.blogspot.hu/

"Kép-lett" Imaging Club

"Kép-lett" is a self-organised club of photographers, videographers and graphic artists. The main goal of our members is to capture events (photos and videos) for students at the Faculty of Arts and Design, as well as to design posters for public events.

Beer Club

The Beer Enthusiasts' Club was founded in autumn 2019 by a small group of TTK students with the aim of promoting the civilised consumption of beer. In addition to learning how to brew different types of beer, they also organise educational lectures and open brewing events.

Faculty events

Freshmen Camp

Every year the Faculty of Natural Sciences of BME organises a freshmen camp for newly admitted BSc students. It usually takes place in early/mid-August, please find out the exact date and how to apply on the TTK HK website. Here you will have the opportunity to get to know your future fellow students and the organizing team of upper year students. It is a key highlight of university life, do not miss it!

Campus

The current (traditional) campus of the University of Technology and Economics is located on the right bank of the Danube, between the Szabadság Bridge and the Petőfi Bridge. Recently, the campus has been extended with two new buildings (I, Q), which were built on the same bank between Petőfi and Lágymányosi bridges, next to the ELTE Lágymányosi buildings. This was not always the case. Founded in 1782, the university was initially housed in the Trefort Garden on Múzeum körút. Together with the development of engineering sciences, the campus became too small and a new site had to be found. The choice fell on Lágymányosi Bay, where construction began in the early twentieth century based on the designs of renowned architects of the time such as Alajos Hauszmann (the central building). The library (Kö) is located next to the central building (K) and is connected by a neo-Gothic corridor known as the Bridge of Sighs. These gorgeous old buildings are surrounded by a well-tended garden where students can relax between classes.

The Institute of Physics is located in Building F behind the library, at the intersection of Budafoki út and Bertalan Lajos utca. Buildings D and R, which house the Institute of Nuclear Technology, and the adjacent Training Reactor (TR) are located south of the central building, closer to Petőfi Bridge. The Institute of Mathematics is located in Building H.

Language learning

The Foreign Languages Centre at the University offers the opportunity to learn the following languages: English, French, Dutch, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, Spanish. It is free to enroll for a certain number of language classes. Language exam preparation courses at several levels, technical language and general courses are available in several languages.
